About

One of the most beautiful and natural areas of the planet that we live on, has to be Hawaii. The state is made up of a number of islands, with the best one for tourists being the second largest island of Maui. Due to its low population density, the majority of the island is untouched by human existence, unlike the main island. The volcano is still classed as being active in geological terms, even though the last eruption was back in 1790. The climate is similar all year round and only changes with altitude. Due to the natural conditions on the island and its position in the Pacific Ocean, certain regions have their own micro climate. Rain is common, and a deluge can appear quickly, but they also tend to move on fast as well. The Hawaiian islands were made famous by the attack on Pearl Harbour in WW2.

Key Facts

  • Maui is the 17th largest island within the United States at 727.2 square miles (1,883km)
  • It became a state of the US in 1959
  • The national flower is the Lokelani
  • The island is volcanic with the highest peak reaching 10,023 feet (3,055m)
  • The population is only just over 27,000, which leaves a lot of uninhabited areas
  • The population is only just over 27,000, which leaves a lot of uninhabited areas
  • The Hawaiian islands are made by a weak spot in the earth's crust, which allows molten magma to leak out. As the tectonic plates move, the weak spot stays in the same place, and this is how the chain of islands is formed

Things To Do

The main city to stay in is Kahului as this is where the airport is situated, as well as a number of large shopping malls. Due to the isolation of the island, prices tend to be higher than the main island. For those looking for a place with lots of activities then look no further than Kaanapali. For a more peaceful place full of history and tradition, visit Hana, a beautiful drive from Kahului.

Being an island, the place is surrounded by a large number of wonderful beaches, with many of the favourites being on the side where the sun sets. Wailea Resort is a great place to stay and gives access to things like pools, a golf course, and one of the best beaches on the island. For those who wish to see some rare species of plants and animals then a visit to the Haleakala National Park will take a whole day.

One of the main reasons that tourists visit the island is for the hiking. There are miles upon miles of trails that spread out into the tropical jungle. Although it is possible to go it alone, for those new to the region it is advised to hire a local guide. They do not cost much, and will ensure the walk is safe.

Another popular pastime is those associated with water. Windsurfing, surfing and boating come top of the list. While fishing can result in some huge catches of saltwater species. Diving and snorkelling will also reveal the underwater beauty around the islands. Organized dives and lessons are available.
