About

For those looking for a vacation in a warm climate with plenty to do for the family, then head to Orlando in Florida, a southern state in the USA. This place has been built for kids and parents with so much for them to see and do. The city has grown exponentially since the 1980's, due in the main to the popularity of the original Disney World, and affordable flights. Orlando is known as 'The City Beautiful', and that is for good reason. While it is also named 'The Theme Park Capital of the World', which is the truth. There are plenty of places that are what can only be referred to as stunning due to the scale of the parks. The whole city is clean, the air fresh, and the climate nice and warm. Although temperatures can get cool during the winter months at night, they warm up during the day. In the summer, humidity is low, so higher temperatures are comfortable.

Key Facts

  • Around 62 million people a year visit Orlando, with most there to stay at Disney World
  • The Walt Disney Company opened up Disney World in 1971
  • The first recorded settlement in the area was back in 1875
  • Orlando covers around 110 square miles (287 km2)
  • Florida is the flattest state in the US, with Orlando only reaching a maximum of 82 feet (25m) above sea level
  • Although very popular with tourists, it has a small stable population for a major US city at just 2,000,000
  • It is host to some of the biggest theme parks anywhere in the world

Things To Do

Thanks to the number of hotels in the region and so many travel companies doing package tours, the costs of traveling to the city is relatively cheap compared to many other locations in the US, even when including the tickets to visit one of the theme parks, which need to be bought in advance to get the best discount.

When it comes to what to do when visiting Orlando, the first port of call is Disney World. Even those people who have no children should experience this theme park. Disney is not the only theme park in town, and it is worth visiting as many as possible. The other ones include Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando Resort, Gatorland, and Legoland Florida. For those who like things related to outer space, then about an hours drive away is the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where the Apollo rockets and Shuttles used to be launched from.

For those who are visiting just for Disney World, then there is no shortage of things to do. Inside the resort are many areas, with the Magic Kingdom being a big favorite with the kids. Disney's Animal Kingdom and the waterpark are also big hits, not to mention the world renowned Epcot Centre.

Orlando itself is full of shops and restaurants, and the best place to be for a tourist is along International Drive. For a relaxing day, a trip to Lake Buena Vista is both peaceful and refreshing. Any time of year is perfect for visiting this city, and some bargains can be found during the cooler months.
