About

When you are looking for somewhere in the world that has a great climate, plenty of attractions and scenery, as well as being famous, then look no further than California, more specifically, San Francisco. Located on the west coast of the US, it is not far from the huge rift in the earth; the San Andreas Fault. However, do not let the latest film about earthquakes put any negatives on what is a fabulous place to visit. San Francisco is a relatively young city, as it was only 300 years ago when Europeans first arrived. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, and is one of the most recognizable locations in Hollywood films. Who can forget the trams and the car chases taking place down the steep streets?

Key Facts

  • The area was first colonized by the Spanish from 1776–1821
  • It officially became a state of the US in 1848
  • Most of San Francisco was wiped out in the major earthquake of 1906
  • It is one of the most diverse cultural cities in the USA
  • Many famous films have been filmed here, such as, The Enforcer, Magnum Force, Star Trek Into Darkness, Mrs. Doubtfire, and more recently Terminator Genisys
  • The highest point of the city reaches 934 ft (285 m)
  • During World War II the city was very active with troops shipping in and out of the Pacific regional war

Things To Do

Flying into the city is amazing, as the planes often fly past the Golden Gate bridge, so keeping a camera handy is a good idea. The International airport is built on reclaimed land which juts out into San Francisco Bay. Unlike some US cities, San Francisco is built in a mountainous region, with buildings on the peninsula working their way high up the sides. Although it can be tough walking up the hills, they do offer plenty of vantage points giving some excellent views of the surrounding area.

San Francisco is such an amazing place, visitors often find that they do not have enough time to visit everywhere they wish to go. The best place to start is the park on top of the Twin Peaks as this gives views all around the Bay area. Take a camera that has a zoom lens to ensure that great shots are possible.

When it comes to places to visit, then the Golden Gate Park should be top of the list, along with a walk along the famous bridge. From the walkway it is possible to see for miles across the Pacific Ocean, and when looking in the direction of the Bay, Alcatraz is clearly visible. For those who have a few hours to spare, then a boat tour to Alcatraz will be rich in education and history.

A visit should always be made to Fisherman's Wharf, especially the famous Pier 39. Some of the best fish food restaurants are located here, and are a treat. San Francisco is totally unique when compared with other US cities, and has so much to offer tourists.
